of hipster shops and eateries, this trendy
Franklin Avenue hangout has been
around since 1994, pouring out alcohol
and dishing up its namesake - the winged
animal - to a buzzing crowd, in the heart
of L.A.'s most historic district, just below
the Hollywood Sign.
Red walls set the perfect backdrop for a
vibrant atmosphere and boisterous
celebration. Winged-animal trinkets adorn
the bar area, while ample strings of lights
colorfully lighten this otherwise dimly lit
space. Shiny black leather booths invite
patrons to kick back and while away their
time. A small-but-cozy bar is non-stop
studded with booze-loving scenesters
rubbing elbows on high stools while
eyeballing the telecast. Two-seater tables
along the all-glass-entrance and a little
patio appointed with heaters, serve
smokers and people-watchers as the ideal
meeting spot.
Wacky personal touches hint at the owner's
delightful sense of humor: A backroom
door signage states: "Employees and
George Clooney only". Another sign in
the back corner booth states: "Reserved
for Go-Go-Dancers after Midnight" -- no
further signs explain how the area is being
transformed. Quirky pictures of chickens
adorn the walls while wittily worshiping
the feathered staple that also dominates
the food menu.
Ringing in the boozy time of the day with
a loud call of the blow horn, this watering
hole's Happy Hour (every Wednesday and
Thursday night from 11pm to midnight) is
a magnet of bar hoppers, Hollywood types
and hungry theatergoers. Birds welcomes
all ladies to Ladies Night every Friday: As
soon as the clock strikes midnight, it's
when cushions are removed and platforms
assembled for the pole dancing queens to
instigate fun while stripping and frivolously
scattering Marshmallows around the swing
equipped birdcage. Volunteering patrons
can shake their stuff to vigorous tunes or
go wild swinging hula hoops with Jessica
Love Hewitt in a fun-loaded competition.
Can you hear the birds chirping yet? No?
Be prepared to choose from a chicken-
centric menu where your chicken fix is
guaranteed. Chicken tortilla soup, chicken
pot pie, rotisserie chicken, Caesar chicken
wraps, Chinese chicken salad to name but
a few are served by charming waitstaff that
call diners 'doll' or 'sweetheart'. Mouth-
watering appetizers include sweet potato
curly fries, fried dill pickles (highly
recommended!), Mozzarella sticks, beer
battered onions and Hot Wings. Non-
winged options like the veggie burger or
vegan wrap satisfy a vegetarian's palate.
Wash it down with a cold beer: Stella, Fat
Tire and Guinness are available on tap.
