An Epicurean's Journey

An Epicurean's Journey

Just like the iconic surfers in Zuma
beach about to catch another wave
and break through white foaming
waters, my company - citysearch -
was about to embark on a new wave
and break into the TV business by
launching a morning segment, airing
weekly on abc7. Up to this point our
roundups, reviews, interviews, best-
of ratings and business profiles were
only available to our readers in
written form, designed to constitute
an online magazine and insider city
guide. Taking up a new challenge by
going on the air was not only a smart
business move but also enabled
editors to have a bout at
broadcasting and broaden their
career opportunities. This is when
I got invited to join the team -
comprising camera men, Jane, the
abc7 anchor, and Tara, the senior
editor - on their quest for the most
budget-friendly dining spots in L.A.:
"The Top 3 Cheap Eats".

"New e-mail from Tara", the unread
message in my Outlook inbox made
me cringe with excitement. Since
Tara's mails usually heralded exciting
projects and fun assignments - I was
ready to tackle a new challenge. As a
senior editor Tara frequently worked
on location, sampling food and drinks
at exquisite eateries and insider bars.

"Hi Kamila", would you like to join me
on the next abc shoot?" My excitement
grew with every line, and while rushing
through the details on the project my
excitement turned almost into despair,
as if Tara might change her mind by
the time I get back to her. Instantly I
hit the reply button to deliver her an
all caps "YES" followed by a jovial
emoticon.

It was on a sun-drenched early dawn
when I embarked on the Sunset bus
and on my quest for arriving at the
first scheduled location - which was
in Thai Town, L.A. - on time."Jitlada",
a pint-size, first-rate, family-run Thai
cuisine eatery and a foodie's paradise
was the first destination and scenery
of our TV-segment shoot. Tucked
away in a sedate, non-descript mall at
Sunset and Harvard, and supposedly
being a best-kept culinary secret in
town, this seemingly hole-in-the-wall
specialized in the cuisine of southern
Thailand. Alongside the abandoned
mall and it's little lot, a fairly scruffy
intersection reigned the at that time
yet non-existent traffic. Grim
architecture sprawled out around me -
like a ghost-town out of a western
movie scene. Who knew that the
world-famous Sunset Boulevard had
so many diverse facets: from hipster
Hollyweird in Silver Lake, to tres chic
Hollyglamour at the Sunset Strip, to
lush hedges and estates in majestic
Bel Air - Sunset Blvd. runs the whole
gamut of the distinctive Los Angeles
Way of Life.
Tara and Saira - our intern - showed
up very soon and we were getting
ready to get the vibe and taste of
authentic Thai cuisine and it's culture,
while an abc7 camera team would
capture the scenes of our culinary
exploration and our whole 'journey of
indulgence' - that had yet two more
restauratns in store.

A waft of mouth-watering, spicy
aromas hit my nose the moment
we entered this Thai eatery. Being
warmly welcomed by the friendly
staff, and cheerfully ushered to the
bright main dining room - which
was traditionally decorated with
gracefully curved oak-wood chairs
and compatible tables, that were
tastefully draped with patterned
purple table cloth and artistically
folded pink/orange napkins - we
set to work, studying the menu
and the exotic ambience.
White walls studded with
photographs, picturing Thailand's
landscapes and portraiting people,
cultural artifacts, artificial exotic
flowers and elaborately patterned
cashmere scarves set the perfect
scene and mood for Thai food.
Streams of a highly positive and
energetic vibe seemed to be
omnipresent at this Epicurean's
temple of indulgence - all soaked
with Buddha's glorious power.

A buzzing camera team was jostling
and bustling around our tables
setting up their entire broadcast
equipment with several lights and
mics, while the female chef of
Jitlada's kitchen was scurrying back
and forth, step-by-step serving us
with sizzling hot specialties of the
house, that were artistically
arranged and beautifully garnished
on white blue patterned porcelain.
Prepared from scratch, the exotic
foods and distinctive aromas were
a true feast for taste buds and eyes.

"And Action!"Finally, when cameras
and lights were arranged all around
the dining room and Jane - abc7's
anchor and L.A. glamazon, sporting
a 50s style white & black polka-dot
dress and needle-thin high heels,
had one final layer of compact powder
applied - casually delivered all details
facing the lenses and holding a mic in
a perfectly manicured, slender hand.
"This Thai culinary gem in Thai Town
serves you with delicacies to reasonable
prizes amid an spiritual atmosphere".
"And cut!" The first scene was wrapped
up.
All lenses pointed on us when we
noshed on steamed mussels, sipped at
creamy fruit-infused concoctions,
sampled crispy coconut-mango salad
and munched on crabs in curry sauce,
while delivering our insider knowledge
on the taste of Thailand during the
second scene of our TV segment shoot.
A short interview with the chef filled
the third scene and made our segment
complete.

From Thai Town to Hollywood: Saira
and I cruised over to the second
location and while being stuck in
traffic we went through our interview
notes and shots of appetizingly
garnished foods and smiling waiters.
Dominic's was our next dining
destination which was nestled on
Beverly Boulevard. This long-
established mainstay, serving simply
executed Italian-American fare, was
where Frank Sinatra used to be a
regular in the 50s. In order to get
into the right mood and ready to
experience Hollywood's vintage
glamour we tuned in Frank's
famous song: "L.A. is my Lady".
With the tune still in our heads we
slid out of Saira's red Mustang and
into a red-brick building. Inside, a
brown tile floor stretched out
underneath burgundy booths and a
dark wooden bar. All walls were
neatly plastered with photographs
of beaming Hollywood's icons. A pair
of French doors led onto a spacious
patio that was covered with all-
weather eaves; strings of fairly lights
sprawled underneath. A brick hearth,
three olive trees and vine-covered
red-brick walls created a perfect
atmosphere to settle back and snuggle
up. Tenderly charred artichoke hearts
along with butter cups served as a
signature, palate-cleansing start. The
appetizer followed a caper-topped
whitefish piccata. Homemade gelatos
like icy blood-orange or rich vanilla
topped off the lavish feast.

Our third and last stop was a long
ride away but completed our TV
segment decidedly. Violet's was
located on Pico Boulevard in Santa
Monica. A fine dining establishment
serving farm-to-table, spiced up
Californian fair, freshly prepared
from organic, local produce and
boasting about it's homemade
pastries, breads, dips and pastas.
Chef Jared Simons' passion is a
style of cooking reminiscent of the
heyday of California's cuisine.
House-cured salmon tart baked
with macaroni and Gruyere
cheese was yet another mouth-
watering and $$-saving highlight
of the day. Washing down the tasty
chow with a handcrafted beer, we
arrived at the end of our "Top 3
Cheap Eats" culinary mission.
I couldn't wait to see the segment
(and in it myself) airing live on abc7
and looked forward to another
delicious restaurant hopping tour.

The Vanity (Af)Fair

Chapter 30: The Vanity (Af)Fair

With it's many facets of beauty -
an exceptionally attractive
crowd and a splendid scenery
and nature as far as the eye can
see - Los Angeles defines the
commandments of The Bible of
Esthetics - celebrating a true
"feast for the eyes" with every
single clause.
Being a beauty magnet, L.A.
attracts charms and style with
it's irresistible magical appeal
accumulating a magnificent
blend of beautiful gems living,
loving and twinkling bright all
over Hollywood - like Tiffany's
diamonds. This is the stuff
that dreams are made of:
Welcome to The Vanity Fair.

Did you know? Gorgeous beauty
can even be spotted at the 99Cent
store (on Wilshire and Fairfax).
How can that be? Read on and
find out.

"Every item 99Cent only" - read
the banderole over the wide glass
door. Ready to tackle my first 99
Cent store experience - after
arriving in the US 7 days ago - I
reluctantly wandered inside this
much advertised "bargain-Mecca".
While coyly strolling around the
long aisles, a sprawling scenery of
floor-to-ceiling shelves unfolded
before me, and every end of an
aisle was primped by a masterpiece
consisting of a staggering high
pyramid of various Campbell's
soup cans all neatly towered up
forming a red pattern - Andy
Warhol would have loved it.

Oodles multicolored, glossy
packaged foods, were squeezed
into wide shelves, side by side
with their competitors adjacent.
The ridiculous abundance of
sweets and snacks, fizzy drinks,
fresh produce, frozen goods,
and all sorts of paraphernalia for
house, kitchen, bathroom and
garden, including tool kits,
gardening utensils, all kinds of
toiletries, stationary and books
were available for 99Cent at this
middle-sized cut-price joint.

Swarms of buzzing bargain-
hunters hustling and hovering
over the ample choice of items
and foods were scrambling
around me, when somewhere
between soya milk and vanilla
yogurt I perceived somebody
calling "Miss"?! I froze and
sheepishly looked around,
when suddenly discovering a
middle-aged man eyeing me.
Sporting a blue jeans, paired
with a faded black shirt, a rough
leather belt matching his black
rugged cowboy boots, a pair of
black Ray Bans casually
hanging from his collar and
with a neat haircut he seemed
like an average bloke. Taken
aback I only managed to utter
a meek "Hi", when he went on:
"How ya doin miss? He smiled
and went on: "I am a people
photographer, and always on a
mission to discover intriguing
and unique faces." With those
things said, he reached out his
hand with a business card in it.
"Give me a ring!", was his final
word. Totally baffled and flushed
I wanted to disappear on the spot.

Totally bewildered from the
encounter and with the guy's
business card in my jeans pocket
I made my way home, strolling
down Fairfax Ave and pondering
about this typical-Hollywood-
proposal.
Sporting dark skinny jeans, an
orange halter-neck top - lovely
embellished with beads and
spangles - golden strappy
sandals over bare feet, big-ass
shades - mandatory in La La
Land - and my hair loosely,
streaming in a mellow breeze,
when I noticed a non-descript
car pulling up and parking
right alongside the sidewalk.

Minding my own business I
went on, striding unhurriedly
alongside the traffic-loaded
street. This was when I noticed
a young man sliding out of the
just parked car, heading towards
me? I coudn't believe it when
he approached me, first I froze
and then cringed when he
reached his arms out and
slung tightly around me. He
was all smiles when suddenly
proclaiming: "You're Paris
Hilton, or what?!"
Backing off abruptly and yanking
my shades off from my nose, I
shyly smiled back at him after
sensing that this non-descript
stranger won't cause any harm to
me. Finally, after freeing myself
from his embrace he added:
"You so look alike."

Sweet Temptations @ Montmartre Lounge

Chapter 30: Sweet Temptations @ Montmartre Lounge

Attention all the sweet-tooth among you!
For some, the Factory of Dreams generates
sweet fantasies, tempting to pursue those
with delectable aromas of glitz and glam.
For many though, it's the land of sweet
revelry, deliciously intoxicating everybody
who dares to nosh on it - with heart and
mind. Immerse into the Land of Dolce
Vita - but do so with care...

The sweet reality is that La La Land's
neighborhoods are lusciously studded
with lovely bakeries and de luxe
confectioneries attracting sugar loving
Angelenos with sweet incentives, lovely
chocolatey tidbits and sugary temptations.
It's a Hollyglamorous sweet secret, a
delicate affair and a sinful treat - since
officially everybody's dieting. So come
with me on a saccharine, mouth-watering
event in the heart of Tinsel Town and go
La La about the most delicious, elaborate,
artistic, fancy and enormous - in every
respect - cupcakes that were gloriously
exhibited on a fabulous Sunday afternoon
at a super hip Hollywood venue - The
Montmartre Lounge.

Who makes the best cupcakes in town?
That was the quest of this hot afternoon
when I hoped on the 217# bus up Fairfax
Boulevard and to Hollywood & Highland.
After having a chat with a fellow passenger
about "where they had flown me in from"
on the - as usual - stuck in traffic Metro
bus, I hoped out when the bus stopped at
the famous intersection - in L.A. you have
to pull a cord to let the bus driver know
that he has to stop at next stop - and was
immediately hit by the scorching heat -
yes, busses have AC too. Dizzy from the
rattly and bumpy bus drive and abuzz
from the masses bustling around me on
the star-studded Walk of Fame - hanging
out in and in front of packed souvenir
stores, speaking foreign languages and
sipping at Starbucks cups - I was almost
knocked down by some youngsters
rolling by on skateboards. A hipster -
blue-framed Ray-Ban specs, skinny
jeans clad - guy was just getting (more)
ink on his sleek chest behind the front
window of a tattoo studio while a size
0 female, wearing next to nothing and
hiding behind a huge pair of Chanel
shades stepped out of her convertible
with a tiny pwesh wriggling in her
skinny arms while she was talking on
her phone squeezing it into her shoulder/
neck crook. Additionally to the dizzying
buzz, exciting vibe and Hollywood-
movie-like scenes my European senses
were befuddled with exhaust fumes
from the ever present bumper-to-
bumper traffic - along Hollywood
Boulevard.
This was when I started to shovel my
way through the crazy Hollybuzz. It
was my 13th day in the Land of non-
stop sun-shine and azure blue sky and
that day I was assigned to attend "The
Cupcake Challenge" - an appetizing
contest, where L.A.'s best bakeries and
cupkerias participated in a contest
judged by a media panel and audience
members.
Finally finding the mysterious gates
to the upscale venue, I had to line up in
order to sign the guest list and see if my
coworker already arrived. She did, and I
was relieved to be at the right spot on
time. Excited to get inside and out of the
heat I made my way upstairs into the
spacious main room where I was
overwhelmed by the sight of oodles little
sugary artworks in the form of gloriously
arranged and variously styled and themed
cupcakes that filled every little space in
the fancy arranged rooms and infused
the air with sweet aromas. This is when
I was approached by my coworker and
was assigned to take pictures of guests
and all the competing participants which
were among others Lucky Devils, Mrs.
Beasley's and Vanilla Bake Shop. A heavy,
dark wooden bar appointed with sleek waiters
fiddling around behind it, invited visitors
to sample wine from the wineries "Flying
Wine Cellars" and "Arthur Earl", and
nibble on savory sesame crackers topped
with aromatic Cheddar cheese.

Adjoining the bar was wide doorway
leading onto a lovely patio that was
brimful at that time offering a wide view
over Hollywood Blvd.'s buzz, and was a
sunny and welcoming escape from the
endless sugary colorful scenery of fluffy
cream toppings and decadently thick
icing covering every mini-cupcake
masterpiece - not to mention all the
ingenious trimmings, elaborate
garnishing and artistic design - it was
a thoroughly sensational feast for all
senses!
Discovering my coworker - she was
one of the judges of the media panel -
in a separate booth, savoring some
fine samples of the sweet temptations
that where en masse artistically
arranged all over the space, I took
pictures of her and the other judges
of this taste buds blowing event. While
she was indulging in many sweet
sensations, to find and honor the
creme de la creme of the wide array -
which were divided into two categories,
a traditional and non-traditional
dessert - I was flouncing through the
rooms, watching sugar aficionados,
playing "I spy surgery"and trying to
capture this saccharine extravaganza
with my camera at hand.
Being not the only photographer and
with the event gradually drawing to an
end, a handsome man with camera in
hand, sporting a black outfit, chatted
me up and invited for a drink at the bar.
After a small talk consisting of all the
obvious W-questions and a red wine I
went back to work and so did he. The
stands were folding up, packing up the
remaining cupcakes in paper boxes
giving them randomly away to the
patrons that were gradually leaving.
Over some cheese crackers and wine,
at the by now deserted bar, my coworker
and I reviewed my shots and summed
up the event while watching the sun
disappear through the open patio doors.
We both were lucky to secure a box full
of sweet ridiculousness which we decided
to bring to the office the next day.

The air cooled off and the sun disappeared
when I stepped out into the hustle and
bustle at Hollywood & Highland and
walked down one block to soak up some
more of the intoxicating vibe before
catching the bus home. When my "Walk
of Fame" was interrupted by red lights,
and I found myself amid swarming crowds,
I spotted - out of the blue - a familiar face
at the very front of the line in a black
convertible. Soon he discovered me, smiled
beckoned, stopped by, openend the door
and let me slide into the car graciously -
in the middle of a busy intrsection.

com - Mar-Star is an inspiring personality, a
hip trend setter, a genuine innovator and a
bright shining star on Hollywood's La La
Lifestyle & entertainment sky. Did I mention
that Mar is the loveliest person ever, a pwesh
activist, voluntarist and a dearest friend of
my -- no? Then read on ...

In spring 2008 I flew out to L.A. for the
very first time. I was a student of journalism
(back in Berlin) and it was My American
Dream coming true when I got hired at
Citysearch's editorial department. I was
deeply determined to conquer notorious
Los Angeles by wooing everybody that
crosses my path and of course by
succeeding as a "Contributing City Editor".
This was when I met and worked with May.
A truly wonderful, glamorous person that
lives and loves L.A. - like I do. Long story
made short, we became good friends and
keep in touch till this day...

On one beautiful Thursday morning I had
the honor to meet Mar at Fox 11 studio and
follow her show which I only knew from tv
so far...
"What's your name miss?", I hear the security
guy asking while checking me out as I pulled
up right to the security booth in the driveway
of the Fox Studios in Century City. "Kamila Prz
... um ... I am on Mar Yvette's guest list". He
checked his lists, nodded and let me pass the
gate. This was when I swiftly drove into the
garage at exactly one minute after nine and -
just as I feared - Mar's show was already in
full swing from what I saw out of my car when
passing Fox Plaza - the show's venue. Jumping
out and into the elevator I run into the lobby
signed all the papers that I was asked to sign
in one go and run out onto the patio to see my
friend Mar host her fabulous weekly show
"Marpop Extravaganza".
Following Mar's request I retrieved a camera
from my LV bag and started capturing the
scenes while snapping as many shots as I could
of the whole spectacle that was abuzz with fun
and pure excitement, representing mouth
watering foods, for great deals, and relaxed
Korean live music played by a group of artists.

Aside from Mar, the stars of the show were
Nick & Stef's Steakhouse, featuring "Girl on
the Grill" action with chef Megan, "Hells
Kitchen" winner Nona Sivley representing
the burger joint "Iron Chef Burger" with
celeb chef and burger champ Kerry Simon,
and "Sound of Korea" - a Korean live band
that turned in a Delchum dance while
succulent burgers sizzled away on a hot BBQ.

With the camera guys bustling around on
the busy patio and Fox 11's famous anchors -
Steve and Lauren - tasting the deliciously
arranged foods and glaming up the show, Mar
wonderfully managed to lead the whole staff
through the event, fading out the Extravaganza
with relaxed Korean tunes. After 10 minutes
the show was over - however only for the TV
audience. Starving camera guys, anchors, the
Korean band, the Fox studio staff and all the
guests were invited to munch and have fun,
and celebrating another fabulous Marpop
Extravaganza.
The folks were almost gone and foodstands
gradually removed when a black limo stopped
before the garage gateway at the Fox Plaza
and a big-ass pair of shades accompanied by
a grey suit and white collar shirt emerged
from the fancy car. Very soon it turned out
that behind the chic attire was John
Leguizamo - the famous actor - who was
willing to pose and smile for some quick
shots. No kidding peeps! After all this is
La La Land which means celeb encounters
happen almost on a daily base -- so keep ya
eyes open -- you never know -- Tom, Brad
or George might wait around the corner --
so keep ya little ass hot & glam!

After the celeb encounter Mar and I spend
the whole rest of the morning over coffee,
eggs and Frenchtoast at a charming, little
eaterie in Santa Monica, chatting away and
sharing the latest news, stories and laughts.
I had a Blast with Mar Yvette and treasure
these invaluable memories and pictures of
that wonderful day. Thank you Mar-Star!

Hollywood: To Be Who You Want To Be

Chapter 28: Hollywood: To Be Who You Want To Be

FYI: Hollywood - aka Tinseltown - is a golden planet revolving
around the rest of the humble world. It's a brilliant piece of
conquered land that grows dreams and billionaires instead of
crops. Vanity and The Midas touch are deeply rooted in
Hollywood's beautiful individuals. A deep faith in their hot
bootys paired with (super high heeled) ambitions, and a
cunning sense of business is a Diva's and movie tycoon's Way
of Life. The infamous "Vanity Fair" aka Rodeo Drive is the
spot where both do their business all through their Dolce Vita.

As a matter of fact Hollywood is a distinct district where traffic
sucks and exhaust fumes infuse the lifes of Hollyglamour and
Hollyweird. Tourists flock and abuse the streets with their
curiosity. Fair enough. Who cares? As soon as I look up into the
incredibly, indescribable azure blue sky and let the warm rays
of Californian sun tenderly kiss my skin and drench me in pure
gold; when I look into the happy faces of Angelenos - I never
want to be elsewhere but just right here - in magical Hollywood -
the factory of (my) dreams. Sunlight, ocean air and passionate
love - these are my staples - completed with a nightly dose of
frenziedly flashing cameras and red carpet glitz.

"How to make it" - is written on everyone's face upon arrival in
La La Land. It's magical gravity draws everybody who has a
dream and dares to live it. Talent and outstanding looks are
often inherent in those who arrive - usually having nothing else
but Their Dream in tow. Whether it is acting, modeling, becoming
a movie producer, playwright or a rock star - Hollywood is where
dreams arrive, cumulate and let those who deeply, passionately
pursue their visions and dreams - eventually become La La-reality.

In Tinseltown handsome and talented are often spotted walking
hand in hand and surely won't go unnoticed: "Show" is not only
what happens on TV or in theater movie scenes - it's what one
embodies and emanates: pure energy, high spirits and always
seeking the spot-light to eventually become the ultimate center
of attraction. L.A.'s scene, vibe and non stop shining sun creates
the perfect background and stage to conquer this brilliant piece
of golden land ... and eventually the bright shine of Tinseltown will
rub off on anyone who is willing to learn the language of fabulous
La La Land.

A J-1 Visa and a student internship where the things I had in tow
when I first entered this world of Rich and Beautiful. It was literally
My American Dream coming true. L.A. here I am!
The first morning when I openend my eyes, got up from the futon
mattress and had a sneak peek out of my room's window, I was
overwhelmed and filled with deep awe. I couldn't believe what I
saw, what evolved out there and didn't dare to leave the house for
the first few days - only accompanied by my roommate - who was a
70-year old lady, an ex Czech model, and the best friend of Uschi
Obermeier.
Ever since then I have been under L.A.'s spell, charmed and
fascinated by this glamorous show's actors and players.

Take a Walk (of Fame) with me ...

Chapter 27: Take a Walk (of Fame) with me ...

FYI: The world's most glamorous public sidewalk is located
in the heart of Hollywood: The Walk of Fame. It's blinding
splendor lies in more than 2,400 five-pointed coral-pink
terrazzo and brass stars embedded in a sparkling charcoal-
colored background. Bearing famouse names, every star is
dedicated to a VIP of The Dream Factory representing one
of the following categories: movie, tv, music, radio and
live performance. Those who end up in bold block letters
on the sparkling grounds of Hollywood Blvd's sidewalk
made it into the A-List of Hollywood's most brightly
sparkling stars. Only in La La Land the stars are at one's
feet - sprawling out 1.3 miles along Hollywood Boulevard
and 0.4 miles on Vine Street it embodies Fame and Glory
and is a proud public monument.

Now, step with me onto the star studded strip of Glitz and Glam
and soak up the thrilling buzz as we strut down the sparkling
ground - can you feel the odd vibrations yet? Whether you come
here to saunter around and shop or to walk down the red carpet in
order to accept an Oscar - the grandeur and transcendental powers
fill the air and invigorate your heart and senses with every step you
take. The substance of the architecture lining the Boulevard seems
to speak the same language like the stars embellishing the ground:
Extravaganza ... one can not resist, but actually acquire.

I used to walk this magical strip every morning, starting from Van
Ness Ave, where I lived with a girlfriend. While savoring every single
step of this fabulous morning walk I soaked up the mellow vibe and
peaceful emptiness of the streets when the first rays of sun tenderly
caressed my skin. As I walked down the street I spotted "Monroe"
and "Chaplin" getting their outfits and make-up ready for the soon
to arrive masses of tourists. Souvenir stores were still closed at 8 o'
clock in the morning and the atmosphere filled with aromas coming
from all the different types of eateries lined alongside the Walk of
Fame. And even though this is by far not Rodeo Drive - with it's
spotless groomed greenery, exclusive boutiques and impeccable
architecture - The Walk of Fame has a special character and charm
that is sheerly addictive. It's open to everyone, it's affordable, laid
back and endlessly fun.
My walk usually ended at Orange Drive, where patrons get their
morning dose of caffeine before hitting the office, or tourists gather
to watch fashionable Hollywood types hang out talking into their
flashy iPhones, blogging their latest news on the fashion scene
wearing super skinny jeans and blue, red, green or black framed
Ray Ban shades. Who cares if one can see their pink panty peeking
from under the tight pants? This is Hollywood!
Here I was - after seven months feeling like a regular - loving the
mood of the scene, tracking down latest trends and styles, getting
the tastes of L.A.'s foods while dining out daily, and investigating the
famous Hollywood Type of hipster and reading the Bible of Hip -
The Hollywood Magazine.

With many of the historic architectural elements still intact the strip
embodies old-school glam of Hollywood's Golden Age: The world
famous Kodak Theater with it's enclosed mall adorned with elephant
sculptures and antique-like murals, the Chinese Theater with it's
signature concrete blocks set in the forecourt, which bear the
signatures, footprints, and handprints of popular movie personalities,
the Pantages Theater, and the infamouse Roosevelt Hotel have
landmark status on Hollywood Boulevard. All the funky stores,
little snack bars, hipster vintage shops and tattoo studios - make
for a quirky mix and substantiate what they call "Hollyweird".

One can imagine that a girl like me does not stay alone for long: peeps
in Hollywood are open-minded, talkative and love to socialize. I
encountered some interesting personalities, hipsters, actors and divas
while exploring the streets of L.A. But first and foremost it was my aura
that made people love me - and even consider me "So L.A.". This is
Hollywood: enthusiasm paired up with lovely looks and great spirits
is the admission to get into Angeleno's sophisticated hearts and worlds.

Malibu - life is too short to live it elsewhere

Chapter 26: Malibu - life is too short to live it elsewhere

FYI: Malibu - a 27-mile strip of Pacific coastline -
is a secluded city of understated glam; like a classy,
massive Tiffany gem, in which facets magical blue
hues of the ocean refract and mingle with golden
rays of the sun. It is a shining beachfront community
with it's wonderful sandy beaches, where the most
sexy lifeguards keep watch - if you have ever seen
“Baywatch” - you know what I am talking about.
Being home to many celebrities, accomplished
actors, movie moguls and sparkling personalities
of the entertainment industry, it is also a city of
refuge – where rich and beautiful pursue a
sophisticated life-(style) surrounded by the scenic
beauty of Malibu’s nature, lush high hedges around
their vast villas and a whole housekeeping crew.

A fashionable Malibu goddess possesses at least five
Bikinis and doesn’t leave the house without sun
protection factor 50. Driving an Italian convertible
along the PCH she wears big ass designer shades that
hide her face. Her long, wavy hair swirls in the ocean
breeze. Her perfectly manicured hands hold a smart
phone that sparkles in the sun while she talks away...
Voila - a scene from the fabulous life of a Malibu diva.

One of these beautiful Californian summer days, I
was invited to spend the day with a fabulous friend
who lives in Malibu. This is when I was privileged to
get an insight into the ocean breeze infused glitz of
the "Malibu way of life". My friend’s house – a
luxurious sanctuary nestled at the edge of a cliff, far
away from the hustle and bustle and busy traffic of
Los Angeles’ streets is equipped with a pool, a gym,
a home theater, a spacious terrace, a garden and a
miniature basketball court. Here in Malibu everybody
seems relaxed, well balanced and self-fulfilled. So is
my friend: she is hardly ever out in the clutter and
nerve-wracking "climate" of L.A.’s streets, she
informed me.
Her house and grounds are literally filled with peace
and harmony - sacred silence permeated with salty
ocean breeze aromas and tender rays of sun nurse
soul and senses. Seagulls and ocean waves create the
only background sound. From the spacious terrace
appointed with a pool and Jacuzzi I look down from
the cliff on surfers waiting to catch a THE wave ...

A friendly, though glossy vibe filled the spacious rooms
and long halls of her house. Furnished and decorated
neatly using grey, white and cream hues, the
extensive
floor to ceiling windows
allowed a stunning view over
the ocean, while golden rays of the Malibu sun bathed
the interior marvelously.
After giving me a tour through
the splendid interiors of her house - we did Yoga on the
private beach. Cooling off in the pool and relaxing with
a drink we hang out for a while, sharing stories and
watching the endless horizon.

The signature Malibu Inn - is where we went to grab a
bite for lunch: an iconic beachside eatery, luxurious hotel
and bar venue with live entertainment and a long-term
treasured tradition that caters to sea food fans with an
inventive array of coastal cuisine, starving surfers and to
Malibu’s vegetarian girls (like me), offering special Tofu
options like the "Tofu Burger" - which I truly loved and
savored. The lovely waitress - another special friend of
my - gave us a special deal on our food and kindly
introduced us to her boss, the chef of the Malibu Inn
restaurant. Patrons hang out al fresco at the cozy terrace
or amid
a picturesque native-American-themed indoor
setting.

Our next stop: the Malibu Lumber Yard Mall -
a fantastic
outdoor mall made entirely of attractive hardwood, a tribute
to the old lumber yard that used to be located here - where
my friend introduced me to some fancy little boutiques.
This is when I have fallen in love with a cute pink bikini that
I have found at this popular store "Kitston". Now it was
time for a 5 o' clock coffee. Starbucks is where Lumber Yard
Mall shoppers get their daily dose of caffeine while watching
beautiful peeps and relaxing in the cool shadow of the
ample
sunshades.
This is a truly beautiful mall: A spacious deck drenched in
sunlight invites you to stay a while on the cozy chairs. Two
levels face into a wood stage where bands play live music
on weekends. Palm trees swish in the breeze while the
mountains tower above you majestically. Fish swim about
in the cylindrical kelp tanks. A picturesque Malibu fairy tale.

… Did I already mention that my Malibu friend is a renowned
personal trainer to a famous clientele that includes Brad Pitt
and Lisa Marie Presley to name but a few? She is a fitness
guru, expert nutritionist and grows her own veggies in her
garden. “Working on the inner strength and overall health”-
is her vocational philosophy. Her sinewy curves and
Hollywood-star good looks are a magnet for attention. …

A Golden Coast (Love-)Story

Chapter 25: A Golden Coast (Love-)Story

FYI: The Pacific Coast Highway, aka Route #1 is
a significant connection between south and north
California. This illustrious path winds graciously
alongside stunning nature sights and the most
beautiful beaches of the wonderful state California,
presenting tourists, locals, visitors and adventure
or retreat-seeking peeps also lovely resorts, great
camping grounds and excellent sea-food eateries.

Driving the longest route of The Golden State many
times up and down, I have always been mesmerized
by the stunning beauty of nature and the endless
recreational possibilities. From San Diego to Santa
Barbara - this is the part I have covered and
discovered - and have fallen in love with. Here is
one Golden Coast story:

"Where are you guys going", the kind saleswoman
asked me at the Nordstrom shoe department ...
This is when I bought a cute pair of brown cowgirl
booties that matched my little Louis Vuitton bag.
Now I was fashionably set for the ultimate Golden
Coast romantic adventure.
... The following day - a beautiful, hot summer noon -
my date (a person I didn't meet before) rang my
doorbell. In this istant I didn't know that this was
the beginning of a the longest, most exciting
rendevouz I ever have experienced: This dashing
gentleman carried me off on a trip I won't forget.

A secluded little horse ranch in the Santa Monica
Mountains was to be the first stop of our journey.
We hit the PCH - excited about our first encounter
and for the adventure that was lying ahead...
While cherishing each others company and
savoring magical moments of romance, we
discovered Santa Monica's mountains on horse's
backs. Aromas of dense shrubs and dry trees
mingled with a fresh ocean breeze, and a cloud of
sand and dust was being swirled up by horse's
hoofs. As the wind stroked my hair I inhaled
deeply; looking down from my white horse, even
deeper down the cliffs, I discovered the dark blue
ocean unfolding before me... what a staggering
height, what a stunning view!

We rode up even higher, galloped lush meadows and
walked up narrow paths and steep hills. From the very
top the horizon, exuberantly framed by the beauty of
nature presented itself to us in it's fullest glory: at
set of sun the sky turned a lush pink-orange mingling
with the brightly glittering sea.

Overwhelmed and loaded with adrenalin we hit the
road again, further riding the PCH looking out for a
spot to celebrate the night with a romantic dinner.
Paradise Cove - a secluded sea-food ocean side eatery -
which serves drinks and food alongside a lovely view
over the pacific - seemed perfect for a candle light
dinner under the stars.
Watching into each others eyes, my date and I indulged
in another magical moment while sitting in the sand
two feet away from the water. The rush of the waves
created a lovely soundtrack and the stars sparkled
bright as we toasted to love with Champagne...

Our next stop was the Santa Monica pier where we
ended up in the famous ferris wheel. The moon
was shining bright and the moment was truly
mesmerizing when the two of us settled back in a
booth and the wheel started moving slowly it's way
up... After going for a few rounds the wheel sudennly
stopped routating and intoxicated by the sweet
romance we found ourselves in a passionate clinch...
Just like in one of those cute romantic-comedy
scenes.

A hidden gem in Santa Barbara

Chapter 24: A hidden gem in Santa Barbara

While listening to the soothing soundtrack of the little
creek that runs alongside the steep hills, we hike up a
trail
that leads us to a hidden little gem, a historic lodge
and former way station for mountain-crossing travelers
nestled amid an idyllic setting: The Cold Spring Tavern -
originally constructed in the 1860s -is located on a stretch
of Stagecoach Road right off Highway 154, within the
hills above beautiful Santa Barbara.

The storybook tavern is surrounded by tall, sinuous trees,
mossy paths, and sandstone boulders; it seems there is
always a mountain breeze that ruffles and wafts the
chimney smoke which mingles with the aromas of the
woods and nature that grows rampantly and snuggles up
to the romantic hut. At once, you feel like you are in an
ancient place - a place where history seems to collect and
merge into the present and finally embrace you with it's
magic... wow, what a scene!

The 3,000-square-foot main restaurant and bar is an
idyllic respite and getaway to folks on the road, Santa
Barbara locals, bikers, out-of state-tourists or adventurous
couples and families - providing a snapshot of California
history.
Behind heavy, wooden doors you will discover a cozy,
rustic ambience with a wood-paneled dining room, a bar
and four stone hearth fireplaces that crackle away and
create a cozy background sound. "Through this world I
stroll or ramble I find that life's just a gamble", states an
old wooden beam that supports the all-wood ceiling.
Rugged shelves mounted high up by the ceiling showcase
a collection of ancient porcelain.

Scuffed wooden walls tell wild western stories about
heroes of a bygone era: animal heads, cowboy shotguns,
rugged hats and rusty horseshoes create a perfect setting
for an authenitc western movie. Next to an animal skin
a golden framed photograph adorns the wall, that presents
a proud native inhabitant: an Indian chief. Big wooden
circular chandeliers hang close by the ceiling and add just
a little bit more light to the oil lamps that gorgeously
enlighten the tables while creating a romantic atmosphere
and making the whole idyllic-rustic / rugged-ancient /
wild-western style complete.

It was a warm summer weekend when I visited. Bands
played relaxed tunes and visitors pulled up blankets on
the little yard. Patrons kicked back while savoring thickly
piled up sandwiches, home fries or homemade biscuits.
The in-door menu offered traditional American fare:
burgers, fries and steaks. A long list of omelet options -
coming in many variations - satisfies every vegetarian's
tummy.
The atmosphere: mellow. We chilled the whole afternoon,
taking a break from every day life - far away from the
hustle and bustle of La La Land's shine and glitz. Fresh
intoxicating air, lush green nature and cozy sounds invited
us to dream. When the fist stars in the sky showed we
savored a romantic meal while soaking up the magnificent
moment.

Iconic Hollywood Glam @ Goa

Chapter 23: Iconic Hollywood Glam @ Goa

A long line of ravishingly glammed up and impeccably
groomed Hollywood types embellish Cahuenga Blvd.
on these Thursday nights, radiating an exciting buzz,
while intoxicating aromas of Eau de perfumes and
colognes fill the heady air outside of Tinsel Town's
celeb-hang-out and hipster hot spot: The Goa Club.

If you live in Los Angeles you always have to stay "au
currant", and at that time, there was nothing hipper
or hotter than this exotic playground for those in need
of a late-night rendezvous or experience a feast for
the senses. Come here when you're in the mood to let
loose and flirt with the wild side. Plunge in and soak up
the sexy La La Land swank on 7,000 square feet of
Indian-themed nightlife revelry from the kingpins
Adolfo Suaya and former soap star Michael Sutton.

... The velvet rope was lifted immediately when the
club's interior craftsman and in-demand Hollywood
designer Kris Keith approached the formidable doorman.
We strolled in like super stars - considering that clubbers
come here and wait in lines, unless they are well-
connected and drop the right names, or are exceedingly
well-dressed, meaning: wearing next to nothing.
Aside from being famous for it's elaborate, swank design
with a brilliant interior decoration, this Asia-themed hot
spot is bathing in the fabulous shine of infamous
personalities like Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton or Avril
Lavigne. That's why this popular club is permanently
haunted by paparazzis too.

Tonight I was to get my "private tour" through the club's
sanctuaries and VIP nooks: Once we passed the door, we
entered a labyrinth that translated distinctive Indian styles
extremely extravagantly: A great number of noble Persian
rugs covered the walls, miles of golden chains dangled from
the ceiling, and a massive golden chandelier mystically
lightened up the sultry ambience. A big "Shiva"-candle-
holder illuminated the main bar. I felt like entering Taj
Mahal. There was also a sultan's bed beautifully arranged
with plenty of pillows and sparkling sheets. The center
of attraction: Slinky dressed acrobatic belly dancers moving
their delicious bodies smoothly over the little stage.

Mesmerized by all the swank and glitz, I found myself on
the cozy two-level back patio with private circular booths
dimly lit by lovely lanterns. We indulged in the magic of the
night while watching the stars sparkling above us.
Handsome waiters served us with Champagne.

The little sushi bar at the top floor invites patrons to have
a bite - although nobody comes here for the food. Multiple
VIP nooks and crannies create a romantic setting for dates.
Flirting, cozy lounging and dancing amid exotic Indian shapes
and all golden decor - this is so L.A. style and Hollywood
gamour at its best!
My companions and I dined at the romantic sushi bar while
soaking up the glam and hype. Another fabulous night in
LaLa Land that I love to remember: Goa is the quintessential
Hollywood experience. However don't take it too serious but
wear your classiest little dress.
